Partnering with James Bisson to champion postural sway testing
We are pleased to see that our local service providers are embracing Balance Mat technology.

James Bisson from Holistic Disability Solutions (pictured with Balance Mat inventor Ian Bergman) is partnering with Balance Metrix Pty Ltd to champion the objective, data-driven approach we offer to client care via our postural sway testing service at Lake Cathie.
“I’m excited to be working with Balance Metrix, using their innovative Australian-developed Balance Mat technology to support falls assessment and management,” James, who has a Registered Nurse background, says.
“For me, this isn’t about replacing clinical judgement – it’s about enhancing it with meaningful data. In just a series of short 20-second tests, the Balance Mat measures postural sway and provides an immediate graph and score, giving clinicians and participants a measurable baseline rather than relying solely on subjective assessment.”
“This is important, because falls remain one of the most critical challenges facing older Australians and individuals with mobility constraints. While traditional falls risk assessments rely heavily on observation, incorporating objective data can transform how providers design and evaluate care plans.”
James has started encouraging clients to visit Balance Metrix for the suite of three postural sway tests valued at $36 incl. GST that can most helpfully be used by providers as part of their usual falls risk assessments. The three tests are in the normal, semi-tandem left-foot-forward and semi-tandem right-foot-forward stances.
During his most recent bouts of postural sway testing, Ian Bergman has found significant differences between people’s postural sway in the left-foot-forward and right-foot-forward stances, enabling targeted allied health interventions to help people get stronger on one side or the other as needed.

“I’m looking forward to delivering Balance Mat assessments and helping individuals, aged care providers and allied health professionals make more informed decisions around falls prevention,” he says.
When clients visit the Lake Cathie clinic and have a Balance Mat test, they receive a printout of their postural sway scores and graphs in each stance to share with their GP and care team. Tracking these metrics over time makes it easier for providers to monitor changes and evaluate the success of physical interventions.
According to James, the old saying is true: “You can’t improve what you don’t measure. By utilising baseline and follow-up testing, providers can gain the precise data they need to design safer, highly targeted and more effective care plans.”
What can objective balance metrics do?
✅ Identify people who may be at increased risk of falls by detecting early signs of balance deterioration before a fall occurs.
✅Justify interventions with demonstrable results and concrete data that supports funding requests and care plan adjustments.
✅ Monitor physical improvements objectively during rehabilitation programs.
✅ Evaluate programs by measuring the true impact of strength, mobility, and balance exercises.
✅ Give participants a clear, visual understanding of their balance improvements and an enhanced ability to gauge their own progress over time.

The semi-tandem stance is part of the protocol we have established for falls risk assessment (3 tests: normal, left-foot-forward, right-foot-forward).

Results are grouped into 3 categories: low, medium and high. The amber (medium) group of people – about 50% – can be assisted with targeted balance therapy.
