Ultra Potential of UltraFLX + Balance Mat for personal trainer clients

Balance Metrix continues to work with innovative allied health and exercise professionals who are exploring new ways to assess and improve balance for their clients. One such professional is Rod Millner, founder of UltraFLX.
Rod Millner is a dynamic personal trainer, published researcher, film-maker and former wingsuit test pilot, instructor and 3-time world record holder who has also had a distinguished career in the Australian military. He operates his own UltraFLX company at Bondi Junction and is gaining recognition among clients as the “Flexibility Whisperer.”
Rod works with a wide range of clients, including many older adults who want to maintain mobility, independence and confidence as they age. He is currently trialling the Balance Mat technology from Balance Metrix to help assess his clients’ balance using objective postural sway data.
Why Measure Postural Sway?
During the trial he will explore how Balance Mat testing can complement his existing flexibility, balance and strength training programs. These are guided by the UltraFLX system – a combination of strength and flexibility training that aims to create functional or performance flexibility.
Over time, Rod Millner believes the data collected from the Balance Mat may help highlight improvements in stability and reinforce the value of targeted balance exercises.
“I’m interested in anything that can help my clients,” he told Balance Metrix Pty Ltd Assistant Manager Raelee Pietrzak. “The Balance Mat gives a known measurement that someone can use for goal setting if there’s any issue. Particularly for those who exhibit balance issues, I’ll put them straight onto the Balance Mat as part of their initial assessment.’’
“For many older adults,” he explained, “balance decline can happen gradually and may not always be obvious during regular exercise sessions. I’m excited about the potential of the Balance Mat to help me identify subtle changes early so that I can tailor people’s individual programs accordingly.”
He told Raelee that many of his clients are focused on maintaining their independence, continuing their exercise programs and reducing their risk of falls as they age. “By introducing Balance Mat testing into their assessments I’ll be able to give them a clearer picture of their balance and provide measurable feedback as their strength, flexibility and stability improve over time.”
“When people are aware of an issue it allows them to set a goal towards improving that issue. Without that, people tend to ignore problems until they become major, so providing them with a goal and re-testing after a certain interval could give each person greater motivation to meet their personal goals,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Balance Metrix is excited to see how allied health and exercise professionals like Rod Millner incorporate objective balance testing into their work with clients.
As more allied health professionals, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, fitness and personal trainers begin to use Balance Mat technology, the opportunity grows to better understand balance, measure improvement and support people to remain active and confident throughout later life.
Balance Mat trials like the one at UltraFLX help demonstrate how postural sway testing can be integrated into exercise programs that support healthy ageing.
Balance Metrix routinely offers a free one-month trial when you sign up for a monthly subscription (valued at $46.50/month after a small one-time setup fee) or an annual subscription (valued at $700 per year with no setup fee).
