Abishek Shrestha attended a conference in Greece

Over the past two and a half years Abishek Shrestha has been working diligently on his PhD studies at University of Canberra (UC), as well as supporting the Balance Mat technology day-to-day as the Balance Mat Pty Ltd company’s Electronics Engineer. He recently presented the first results of his research at a major electronics engineering conference (IEEE Medical Measurements & Applications) in Chania, Greece.

Abishek’s paper entitled  “Assessing the Reliability and Validity of a Balance Mat for Measuring Postural Stability: A Combined Robot-Human Approach” was co-authored by his PhD supervisors: human movement and falls researcher Senior Lecturer in Electronics Engineering Dr Maryam Ghahramani, Associate Professor in Physiotherapy Dr Angie Fearon and Professor of Robotics Damith Herath.

The research evaluated the Balance Mat’s test-retest reliability by using a robotic arm to simulate controlled and repeatable sway patterns and examined its validity by comparing the postural sway measurements of 51 people obtained from the Balance Mat and a gold standard force plate.

Results from the combined robot-human study suggested that “the Balance Mat is a reliable and valid tool for measuring postural sway” and that it showed “moderate to strong correlations with force plate measurements” as well as consistently capturing sway across various stance conditions.
